On September 22, a recent report by Bloomberg Businessweek revealed that the crypto assets trading platform CEX suffered a previously unreported attack, where a teenager and his accomplices accessed employee accounts. The Bloomberg report focused on Noah Urban, a member of the cybercrime group "Scattered Spider." Urban is skilled in utilizing phishing attacks to target employees of telecom, technology, and crypto assets companies, aiming to obtain sensitive data for himself and his accomplices. One of Urban's successful attacks was carried out with the help of another hacker named Jack, and the two successfully gained access to an employee's account at CEX. This attack occurred sometime before March 2023, when Urban became a target of an FBI raid, during which the FBI seized $4 million worth of crypto assets from Urban, as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry. A spokesperson for CEX stated that the data breach affected the personal information of "a very small number of people" and did not involve any customer funds.
